Artist of the Week
Artist: Tali Foxworthy-Bowers
Artform: Choreographer What do you do and what are your main focuses? I am a contemporary dance choreographer. The main focus in my work is to make contemporary dance and movement accessible and relevant to a wider, non-industry audience. Where have you studied? I studied at Morningside Advanced Training in Edinburgh before moving to London to complete my BA in Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Why do you like contemporary art and why do you think that it is important? I think contemporary art is incredibly important today. In such a conflicting and high stakes time, contemporary art can offer clarity, escape, suggestion, and the opportunity for reflection and open mindedness. |
Tell us about 'Illuminations'.
My piece Illuminations was performed in May 2019. It explores how all elements of light affect movement. Inspired by Olafur Elliasson’s element encompassing work, it simply presents the audience with the opportunity to experience changes in the light and watch in close proximity how this affects the physicality of six dancers.

What is your role in 'Snow White: Reimagined'?
I am the choreographer!
What are you most looking forward to in the production?
I am looking forward to getting stuck into rehearsals with the dancers and watching the piece unfold. I can’t wait to see what we have been working on come to life through movement.

Why do you choreograph?
I think people underestimate the power of movement. It is the foundation of so much of what we do and how we live, and to be able to harness and sculpt movement in order to actively convey something is a fantastic ability to have. Of course, there is a place for dancing for the love of dance. But as dancers, we have the amazing potential to express and communicate through our bodies - I think this is the most human thing one can do. What are you influenced by? It might sound cliché, but I really am influenced by everything around me. An everyday scene, an individuals’ story, intricate detail of an object, life changing global events - all have incredible movement potential, and they all have their place in the world of dance. Of course I am inspired by pioneering dance practitioners and choreographers, however my movement comes from being curious about the body and the world. |
Have you ever failed at something and what happened as a result?
‘Failing at something’ is the best thing you can do. I have ‘failed’ at a lot of things. Some of my pieces have not even made it to be shown. But this is when you learn the most - it teaches the most about who you are, what you want to do with your art and makes you so much more resilient. It is such a flaw in our education systems that failing is shown to be negative, especially in art. Failing at something is what shapes you as a person.

What is more important, talent or hard work?
Hard work is absolutely more important than talent. If you are talented but not willing to work hard, you will get nowhere. People are always willing to give you more time if they know you work hard.
What excites you most about the art world today?
I am always excited by the art world today - collaborations, new things to discover, learning from other movers, it is constantly stimulating. I am currently very interested in movement direction - it is amazing working with actors and directors who bring a totally different approach to movement. It is really rewarding to be able to help someone uncover a movement language in their own body, and allow them to realise the physical potential they have.
